1969年，艾尔顿·约翰第一张个人专辑《Empty Sky》在英国发行 ；同年，艾尔顿·约翰与“布鲁斯理论”吉他手卡莱布·夸耶（Caleb Quaye）、鼓手罗杰·波普（Roger Pope）以及贝斯手托尼·穆雷（Tony Murray）合作录制了单曲《Lady Samantha》 ；同年，与贝尔尼·陶宾合作创作了歌曲《Can’t Go On（Living Without You）》参加欧洲电视网歌曲大赛，但在所有参赛的6首歌曲中，它排在了倒数第一
